Rhythm Traders' STEER Conga Skins

Rhythm Traders' Steer & Premium Water Buffalo Skins for Congas:

We carry both 20" Steer and Premium Water Buffalo skins for you to mount.
Water Buffalo vs. Steer? When you hear Latin recordings from the 60's and 70's, (usually on Gon Bops or Valje's), what you are hearing is Steer. Most Congas today, (manufactured by LP, Toca, Pearl, Meinl, to name a few) are made in Thailand and they use the closest relative of the Steer that they can inexpensively use...the Water Buffalo.
Steer has a warmer tone and is more melodic. Usually "white-ish" and opaque in appearance...perfect for Rumba.
Water Buffalo, on the other hand, is emerging as the skin for the contemporary sound (think Giovanni Hidalgo). Buffalo is thinner, has more ring to it, and makes for the crisp slaps you hear on recent recordings. Usually translucent, and or brownish in color...perfect for Salsa.

Our pre-mounted heads won't necessarily fit other drum brands, as sizing varies greatly. Our 10" pre-mounted head won't necessarily fit your 10" vintage conga. We strongly recommend custom mounting one of our flat skins when re-heading other brands of drums, to ensure a proper fit.

A first in the industry, we've taken our decade of experience helping drummers build their own drums to new heights. Presenting Rhythm Traders' Mambo Series Conga Kits! You can paint'em, stain'em, carve'em, burn designs on 'em, or inlay your grandma's diamonds if you want. Our new "Mambo Series" Conga kits were designed by us with intermediate and pro players in mind. These babies have tone, tone, tone and enough high-tech design to make them last for years. The shell construction gives maximum contrast between bass/tone while providing maximum projection. You'll love our four sizes, from our Cuban proportioned super quinto to our fat-belly Tumbadora.

Level: Intermediate to Pro.
