Klimax: "Giraldo Piloto & Friends"

Many of you may know Klimax namely for their Salsa. This Latin Jazz CD has been a mainstay in our CD player all year. Crazy drum breaks and blistering horns. Fans of Irakere will love this one.

Jesus Diaz: "Caramello"

Great percussion from this veteran. Mixes timba, salsa, and hip hop just right. This disc simply stays in rotation at our shop. Listen to this thick groove...

Rebeca Mauleon & Orestes Vilato: "Round Trip"

Not only can Rebeca play a mean montuno, but she surrounds herself with the likes of Orestes Vilato (Timbales), Horacio Hernandez (Traps), and Jesus Diaz (Conga/Vocals) on this disc. This one is in-the-pocket.
HEAR A SOUND CLIP! CD: $ 13.99
Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez: "Italuba"

After recording hundreds of albums for other people, "El Negro" has finally put together his own scorching Latin Jazz disc featuring the quartet of Ivan Bridon Napoles on piano, Daniel Martinez Izquierdo on bass, and Amik Guerra on horns. Beware...it's funky and loaded with surprises!

Tony Martinez: "Maferefun"

These 2 CD's have been on our top 10 list for a long time. One of the best Latin Jazz rhythm sections around, with Gonzalo Rubalcaba (Piano), Julio Barreto (Drums), and Eduardo "Dudu" Penz (Bass).

Alex Acuna and Acuarela de Tambores: "Rhythms For a New Millennium"

Recommended! Pure percussion. Imagine Alex Acuna, Giovanni Hidalgo, Luis Conte, and plenty more spice from Brazil and the Caribbean.
HEAR A SOUND CLIP! CD: $ 15.99
Mongo Santamaria: "Skin on Skin (1958-1995)"

This has so many great moments from the man who helped Latin rhythms gain a foothold in American jazz. That old-school hollow tone of his congas is inimitable. Everybody can learn from this one!

Irakere and Various Artists: "Afrocubanismo"

"Recorded live in Banff with Irakere and special guests Changuito, Miguel "Anga" Diaz, Los Munequitos, Ilu Ana and other top Cuban artists. This is a summit of master musicians if there ever was one. Check out this lick with one of my favorite young congueros (Anga), with one of my favorite pianists (Chucho), with one of my favorite Latin Jazz Bands (Irakere)...all live in Heaven, I mean Banff..."--Tres Dos.
HEAR A SOUND CLIP! CD: $ 15.99
Jessie Marquez: "Sana Locura"

THIS is what's hot on the street. Latin Beat Magazine has called Jessie Marquez an "unknown American Diva with Cuban roots". Jessie went to Havana in 2004 and recorded this disc with heavy-weights from Afrocuban Allstars, Irakere, and Issac Delgado's band. It's no wonder the Cubans have taken notice. This classy debut disc, laced with venerable vocals and countless sauve grooves will stay in your CD rotation for years. Guaranteed. Check out these two great clips.

Meaning "Religion of the Congo", this high-powered quartet has one of my favorite drummers, Raul Pineda on it, and it smokes.
HEAR A SOUND CLIP! CD: $ 15.99
Paquito D'Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Giovanni Hidalgo: "Reunion"

Many great moments and up-tempo modern grooves on this disc. This was Paquito and Aruturo's first "reunion" after leaving Cuba and the super band, Irakere.

Poncho Sanchez: "Poncho At Montreux"

Ralph Irizarry and SonCafe: "Tributo"

NEW! Another killer album led by timbalero Ralph Irizarry and assisted by Bobby Allende on congas and bongo. Soncafe is a smaller group of his than the Timbalaye we love. We look at all the discs we carry from a drummer's perspective. This one is very tight, very percussive, and very danceable. This 1996 recording is essentially 11 tracks (72 minutes) of medleys paying tribute to Ray Baretto, La Lupe, Pete "El Conde" Rodriquez, and Charlie Palmieri among others. Here's a cut from the Ray Barretto Medley.
HEAR A SOUND CLIP! CD: $ 16.99
Ralph Irizarry and Timbalaye: "Best Kept Secret"

"Former Timbalero for Ruben Blades, Irizarry's band is tight, sophisticated, and has many crushin' moments. If Master Timbalero Tito Puente says, "This band is burning!", you know it is."--RH
HEAR A SOUND CLIP! CD: $ 17.99
Oaktown Irawo: "Funky Cubonics"

Pretty funky, and why not? With Dave Garibaldi (Drums), Jesus Diaz (Percussion), and Omar Sosa (Keyboards). The first track starts with traditional rumba, then goes into a sickeningly funky groove. Recommended!
HEAR A SOUND CLIP! CD: $ 15.99
Pink Martini: "Hey Eugene!"

NEW!! The third album from Portland's own, Pink Martini....not only is the band rock solid, but China sings vocals in Portuegese, Arabic, and French...just to mention a few songs on this album. This great band is becoming world-renowned...and for good reason! Check out this clip!
HEAR A SOUND CLIP! CD: $ 16.99
Pink Martini: "Sympathique"

Roots of Rhythm: Hosted by Harry Belafonte"

This DVD hosted by Harry Belafonte has just been re-issued. This 3-hour DVD features performances by Tito Puente, Gloria Estefan, Celia Cruz, Dizzy Gillespie, Ruben Blades and many more. It has a ton of footage from Cuba in the late 80's and some much earlier archived work. Lots of rumba, mambo, changui, and salsa from the pioneers who created those styles. Because it explores the trans-atlantic dialogue and links between Africa and Cuba, well, we had to give it two thumbs up!! Recommended.
   DVD: $ 29.99
